The Strathfield Breast & Thyroid Centre is a specialist clinic that offers multidisciplinary surgical care to both breast and thyroid patients.

Recognising that, as well as breast cancer, a large part of our practice is devoted to thyroid and parathyroid cases, we have launched a new website to reflect that reality.

Located within the Strathfield Private Hospital our clinic has ready access to state-of-the-art radiology imaging services. This means that patients can usually complete most of their diagnostic workup within a single visit.

Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer is an all too common and confronting disease. We at the Strathfield Breast & Thyroid Centre recognise the alarm this diagnosis causes and do everything possible to support and nurture our patients, both medically and emotionally.

Patients are referred to us for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, they have confirmed cancers diagnosed by BreastScreen or their family doctor. Others have concerning symptoms, which we investigate thoroughly, while others come for regular breast screening.

Our ethos is to be thorough in our workup and conservative in our care to ensure patients receive individualised treatment that takes heed of their personal circumstances.

We want to reassure women that a referral to us is not a confirmation of cancer. Indeed, in many cases, we are able to rule this out as a result of our diagnostic investigations.

However, should someone require surgery, Dr Gluch utilises state-of-the-art techniques to offer patients the very best cosmetic results while having an excellent understanding of what is required to treat their cancer. Where appropriate he is able to offer women immediate breast reconstruction.

Thyroid and Parathyroid

We welcome all referrals for thyroid or parathyroid problems that require assessment or surgical care. The availability of ultrasound in our consulting rooms allows us to perform thyroid biopsies during a patient’s initial appointment. If required additional imaging workup may be arranged in our X-ray department. The hospital’s laboratory services are able to provide same-day results for standard thyroid and parathyroid biochemistry. Patients requiring nuclear medicine imaging can be referred to nearby Concord Hospital or to private practices in the area.

Dr Laurence Gluch is a specialist breast and thyroid surgeon, and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1985, and completed his advanced surgical training at Royal North Shore Hospital in 1999. After receiving his surgical fellowship, Dr Gluch undertook research in Magnetic Resonance at the Institute for Magnetic Resonance Research in Sydney. This research took him to the US where he was a visiting fellow under the pioneer of interventional magnetic resonance surgery, Dr Ferenc Jolesz, at the Brigham and Women’s’ Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. In 2003, Dr Gluch was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of Sydney for his thesis on the application of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Imaging in the diagnosis of Breast Cancer.

Dr Gluch commenced practice at the Strathfield Breast Centre in 2003. Recognising that the name of the Centre often confuses his thyroid patients, he has chosen to launch the Strathfield Breast & Thyroid Centre. Here Dr Gluch aims to reflect the high standard of care by which the Strathfield Breast Centre has been recognised since its inception.

Dr Gluch is a member of the Australasian Society for Breast Diseases, the International Surgical Society, and two of its integrated societies, Breast Surgery International and the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons. He holds an appointment as Honorary Associate Professor at Macquarie University.

Dr Gluch works in both the public and private hospital systems, operating at Concord Hospital and the Strathfield Private Hospital. He actively participates in multidisciplinary team meetings with fellow surgeons and oncologists.
